Like New York, Johannesburg is a city which culturally evolved from immigration. This has led to a diverse palette of cuisines and
hundreds of restaurants to choose from when considering eating
out. Most can be found in popular dining districts that have evolved
around the city, often reflecting the culture of that district.

Parkhurst’s food strip on Fourth Avenue is popular for its sidewalk
café feel and has an interesting choice of restaurants to choose from. Just up the road is Greenside’s strip on Gleneagles Road– with pizza, Indian and café food, and Parktown North’s cluster of
steakhouses is close.
Traditional African food can be found in more and more restaurants,
but Soweto’s Vilakazi Street is the most popular with visitors.
Other notable food destinations include Melrose Arch, Sandton, the
south for its Portuguese cuisine, Melville, and the new Chinatown—a
strip of restaurants and Asian grocery stores in Cyrildene, just above
Bruma Lake. Norwood and Illovo are where you’ll find a number of
good Italian restaurants.
For most restaurants, dressing “smart casual” is a good bet, as
is making reservations.
Joburgers tend to eat fairly early, arriving
between 7pm and 8pm for dinner. Some are closed on Sunday
nights and Monday - it’s best to phone ahead and check.
